Jean-François Le Gall is a specialist of probability theory. His early research work was concerned with fine properties of Brownian motion in space. Then he studied spatial branching processes and invented the new probabilistic process called the Brownian snake, which has strong connections with certain semilinear partial differential equations. He developed a theory of continuous random trees, which appear as scaling limits of the well-known discrete Galton-Watson trees. In the last ten years, he has worked on models of random planar geometry which are motivated by two-dimensional quantum gravity. He studied the model known as the Brownian map, and proved that it is the universal scaling limit of many classes of discrete random graphs embedded in the sphere. Jean-François Le Gall has received several awards, including the 1997 Loève Prize and the 2005 Fermat Prize. He was a also a plenary lecturer at the 2014 International Congress of Mathematicians.

Originally from the small, rural town of Schulenburg, Texas, Michelle Eilers, ’10, choseTufts because she wanted to attend a school where students learned just as much from theirpeers during political debates in the dining hall and late-night discussions about global dilemmasin the dorms as they did from their professors. She wrote, “I want to meet people withwhom I have nothing in common and argue about values and beliefs. I want to interact withpeople involved in making real world contributions, because I want to make meaningful contributionsof my own.” In Tufts, Michelle and many other like-minded students have found aperfect match.

Maybe this is such an obvious answer from the dean of admissions but I love Tufts' students. They’re thoughtful and quirky and down-to-earth and earnest. It is so interesting to have conversations with them because they don’t always follow conventional wisdom or stereotypes, and that’s definitely an intentional outcome of our admission process. We want to shape an undergraduate community that mixes people from eclectic backgrounds and perspectives and see what happens when they interact. For example, one of my favorite pre-major advisees (I advise 10-12 students in each entering class) is an African-American from a DC charter school who’s a conservative Republican who plans to major in history and religion before he joins the Air Force. Every time he appears in my doorway, I know something interesting is going to come out of his mouth, especially when we discuss the upcoming presidential election. He keeps me on my toes! That kind of interaction is not uncommon at Tufts. We attract activists (in other words, students who aren't passive) and thinkers, people who don’t simply accept the status quo. Jumbos like to mix it up. They have depth. And they are uncommonly likable people.
