Though every piece of writing differs from the other in some aspects, there are many similarities too among them. The writer needs to have a proper knowledge of various formats of writing so that both the differences and similarities are well-addressed. Guidelines for part 1, the reflective and reflexive journal
What & why
Reflecting on learning (and teaching) and also considering how this can impact your future actions is a key skill to develop as a language teacher. The aim of the journal is to encourage engagement with the content of the course and how the different aspects link together. You will also find reference to leaner diaries in different parts of the course and in practical handbooks on language teaching and teacher education. This journal will give you the opportunity to try one out yourself.
What is the difference between a reflexive diary and a reflective diary/Journal?
There is a small but subtle and very important difference between producing a diary that is reflective and one that is reflexive. With regard to the difference between reflection and reflexivity, Darling (1998) says the following:
The differences between reflection and reflexivity are readily apparent. Reflection is related to self and improving future practice through a retrospective analysis of action. Even in the reflection-in-action process, reflection is post facto, relating to completed stages and analysing them before taking the next step. Reflection is future focussed in that it seeks to improve practice through an understanding of the relative successes and failures of previous events, however it remains connected to the past focussing on completed stages. Reflection takes the form of a cumulative body of knowledge that can then be used to improve practice. Although reflection influenced the development of reflexive practice, there are profound differences. Reflexivity is pro active as its focus is on providing practitioners with a tool that will simultaneously improve their communication and help make them aware of assumptions and priorities that shape their interaction with others. Reflexivity can be used to provide insight into priorities before the party reacts to the other. Reflexive practice in this manner can have an immediate impact in improving practice, as practitioners are able incorporate new insights into each interaction. The difference relates to when the process of introspection takes place. In reflection, it takes place after an interaction, whereas the reflexive process incorporates introspection into each interaction.
The easiest way to interpret this is to see your diary/blog as a tool to aid deep learning and understanding of the various topics that will be covered by the course. With any diary/blog there will be an element of both reflection and reflexivity. To ensure this is the case you should consider the following. Instead of just writing about what was said in class and what you read (which would be more reflective) you should write down your thoughts and opinions in terms of how the discussion or your reading made you feel both at the time and afterwards; how did you react to what was being said and why? It is about engaging with the process of learning in terms of discussion with your peers and with yourself. If you do this your writing will be more reflexive. As you develop your diary this reflexivity will allow your diary, in terms of what you say, to evolve and become more intuitive because you will constantly be reacting to the material and building links with previous and hopefully future class topics. This will also help you to develop important study skills, such as the ability to raise questions and develop coherent arguments and rationales for why you believe something to be the case.
How it is assessed
Your diary or blog is worth 20% of the final mark for this class and you will be assessed on the following issues:
• Engagement – does the diary show evidence of reflexive engagement with the weekly topics through comment or discussion of the set reading or class discussion?
• Linkage –
a) does the diary provide evidence of recurring themes or linkages that tie the whole course together and/or that make links between the course and other areas of learning e.g. other university courses, personal life experiences etc?
b) do the entries and points arising show understanding and engagemtn with key principles?
• Interpretation – does the diary show evidence of the student questioning certain issues or of attempts to develop arguments and debate on particular issues?
• Presentation – is the diary well presented, clear and easy to read?
You should complete an entry every week. If you missed a seminar you should still be doing the relevant reading and ensuring that you are up to date with the work, therefore you should be able to write a diary/blog entry based on the reading you have done. You should complete an entry every week although for the final assessment, you will select 4 entries.
You will receive formative feedback on two entries in the first third of the course.
