Buddhism Guide | Buddhism and Euthanasia

Lay-people do not have a code of Buddhist law, so the strongest that can be said of a lay person who takes part in euthanasia is that they have made an error of judgement.

Buddhist views on euthanasia essay - …

This essay first discusses the three major arguments in favor of euthanasia and physician-assisted-suicide in contemporary Western society, viz., the arguments of mercy, preventing indignity, and individual autonomy. It then articulates both Confucian consonance and dissonance to them. The first two arguments make use of Confucian discussions on suicide whereas the last argument appeals to Confucian social-political thought. It concludes that from the Confucian moral perspectives, none of the three arguments is fully convincing.

Buddhist and christian views on euthanasia essay

Buddhists are not unanimous in their view of euthanasia, and the teachings of the Buddha don't explicitly deal with it.

Buddhism places great stress on non-harm, and on avoiding the ending of life. The reference is to life - any life - so the intentional ending of life seems against Buddhist teaching and voluntary euthanasia should be forbidden. Certain codes of Buddhist monastic law explicitly forbid it.

This entry traces the origin and the shifting meanings of the term euthanasia and gives a brief overview of the attitudes towards and practices regarding euthanasia (understood as mercy killing) in different cultural contexts and throughout history. It discusses euthanasia in the Greek and Roman period, Christian responses to euthanasia, attitudes of world religions towards euthanasia and suicide, the role of renaissance and enlightenment, the origin of the proeuthanasia movement in the second half of the nineteenth century, and the German policy of nonvoluntary euthanasia preceding and during the Second World War. Recent developments (starting in the 1960s) are discussed elsewhere.

When the President of the Society published a book on world attitudes on euthanasia the following year, only 2 percent (2.5 out of 150 pages) was about Buddhist attitudes, and those ideas were gained from California Buddhists, not from Japanese Buddhists at Nice.

Most Buddhists (like almost everyone else) are against involuntary euthanasia. Their position on voluntary euthanasia is less clear.
