Tyler, Anne -- Criticism and interpretation

So it's surprising, in this new book, to watch Tyler depart from her own pattern. Usually, she begins with a close focus on one or two characters and then widens it to reveal their ensnarement in family and local ties. Her previous novel, "The Amateur Marriage," a portrait of a partnership that lasted for decades — but shouldn't have — opens in her typical quietly inexorable tone: "Anyone in the neighborhood could tell you how Michael and Pauline first met." But in "Digging to America," Tyler's characters face the future, not the past, so she doesn't let the freight of personal history freeze their forward motion, although it sometimes slows them down. She starts in the present and mostly stays there, traveling backward just enough to give us clues about her characters' impulses.

Tyler's stature as an important literary figure was confirmed by the success of (1980), which was nominated for the National Book Critics Circle award and received the Janet Heidinger Kafka Prize.

Anne Tyler - Biography - SwiftPapers

Anne Tyler's Baltimore has changed significantly since her first book appeared more than 40 years ago. Until now, though, her voice has remained remarkably consistent. Her prose is at once unpretentious and elegiac, like a photograph by Dorothea Lange, and her imagery has staying power. Taken together, the distinct but overlapping worlds of her novels have formed a Sensurround literary record of the 20th-century American family — or, at least, of the proud but troubled archetypal families that once interested her most.

The Pursuit of True Happiness Anne Tyler has said that she uses the family unit to show “how people manage to endure together—how they grate against each other, adjust, intrude, and protect themselves from intrusions, give up, and start all over again in the morning,” (Applebee et al. 1007). From this quote, a reader can assume that Tyler encourages perseverance and courage. Life all too often presents challenges, but it is how you handle those challenges that matters. Throughout many of her fictional works, characters are placed in unsettling conditions that take a toll on their lives as a whole, usually in a negative way. These unhappy characters seek escape from familial relationships, marriages, and friendships in order to pursue a fantasy, leading to a better personal life.

There can hardly be a more American 20th-century writer than Anne Tyler. Anyone who has grown up with her books — "Searching for Caleb," "Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant," "The Accidental Tourist," "Back When We Were Grownups" — has by now become familiar with her unflashy mastery of the national idiom, her dour whimsy, her tapestries of suffocating families (who nearly always live in or around Baltimore) and the rogue siblings and spouses who try, and usually fail, to become unknitted from their tight weave. Tyler's curiously undramatic fatalism is both haunting and reassuring. Her characters are restless, but they don't succeed in being rootless, no matter how hard they try.
